Light through coloured glass comes out soft and directed downward — comfortable to read by, never glaring. Ø30 cm fits a bedside table without getting lost on a desk; it is the most frequent purchase and the most frequent gift. Ø40 cm works as a light source in its own right: on a living-room chest or a hallway console, the lit shade throws coloured reflections onto the wall.

Most bases are cast zinc alloy — heavy enough that the lamp will not tip. The polyresin versions are lighter and cheaper, and their relief is deeper, because polyresin casts finer than metal. The shade is the same either way: stained glass, copper foil, hand soldering. Use a warm 2700K LED bulb — cold light kills the colour of the glass.
